Rewilding

We are lucky to have 33 acres of land but land equals responsibility and we had to decide how we were going to act as stewards for this land. The farm is too small to be a conventional modern farm but it offered us opportunities to diversify and to pursue our “rewilding” project. The land was previously used to graze sheep that have a negative impact on wildlife due the way they eat the grass down to the soil. We wanted to reverse this trend, to support the existing wildlife and help it to thrive. So we set about creating a variety of wildlife habitats. Firstly just over 1/3 has been planted with native broadleaf trees (6,000 in all), in another 1/3 we have created a traditional cider apple orchard using full size rootstock and finally the remaining land has been given over to rough grassland which includes a wildlife pond. Every year we have been pleased to see an increase in the numbers of invertebrates, birds and mammals.
